I found my husband on an online dating site
This story was originally published on Motherwell , a digital publication that tells all sides of the parenting story. Around us, white lights twinkled from the branches of thick heritage oaks. Other circular tables surrounded ours, wine glasses winking in the pass of headlights. South Congress bustled on a November evening still warm on our skin, though a cool underbelly promised change.
I looked from my husband to his daughter, fifteen years old to my twenty-seven. Robotically, as if I had no choice:
“Both my husband and I had joined Tinder to get back into the dating scene after having just gotten out of long-term relationships. Neither of us had any intention of getting into a serious.
I had been skeptical about online dating, but became curious about it after two of my friends met their current spouses on a popular site. Initially, it was rough. I received a number of salacious inbox messages from strangers who inquired about my measurements without ever asking my name. I did get some respectful messages, and while they were sweet, they came from men old enough to be my father.
Disheartened, I was just about to close my account, when I saw a profile that made me reconsider. There was warmth and an excitement in it that made me want to know more about him. Uncharacteristic of me, I messaged him and told him so. Soon after, he replied to return the compliment. From that point on, there has not been a day that we have not been in contact. I also met my fiancé on that site. It was a real crazy story. I had gotten out of A divorce a year prior to trying the site and I said to myself I’ll never do online dating but just give it a shot.
I entered the relationship with my husband with positive preconceived notions of his ex based on what I had seen growing up in my own family; My mom and stepmom getting along fabulously. So my confusion began early on when I expected her to treat me neutrally or better — not like the enemy. It was as if, before ever meeting me, her mind created this horrible person and she placed that image, like a mask, onto me.
Years later it would become obvious that nothing I could ever do or say would change her image of me. Protect yourself at all costs Looking back, the one thing I wish I would have done differently was completely deny her access to me. I should have refused all contact with her, but I kept thinking of a million different reasons to leave myself open. I tried to be compassionate and patient. I tried explaining myself, correcting her misperceptions, etc… But all that did was keep her engaged and allow her to keep dumping her aggression onto me.
I would block her from email periodically, but never consistently. And this was my mistake — allowing her back in over and over again. When someone is aggressive towards you and is completely stuck in their own reality with no willingness or ability to see you in any other light, the only way to protect yourself is to stop giving them access to you. Granted, there was no way I could have known what I was in store for. So how do you know when you should cut off contact?
